Cybersecurity

Not another breach!

A cybersecurity breach is when someone, often with bad intentions, manages to access your computer, smartphone, or other digital devices without your permission. Imagine it like someone breaking into your home, but instead of stealing physical items, they're taking personal information, such as passwords, bank details, or private messages.

Just as you would lock your doors and windows to keep your home safe, there are digital "locks" to protect your information online. When those locks are bypassed or broken, and someone gains unauthorized access, that's what's known as a cybersecurity breach. It's a serious issue because it can lead to identity theft, financial loss, or other harm.

Ransomware is a type of malicious software, or malware, that takes control of your computer or files and demands a ransom—usually money—to give you back access. It’s like a digital hostage situation. The attacker will lock you out of your computer or encrypt your important files so you can't open them. Then, they’ll ask you to pay them to get everything back.

Imagine if someone locked all the doors in your house and told you they would only give you the key if you paid them. That’s essentially what ransomware does, but in the digital world. It can be very damaging and stressful, so it’s important to take precautions like keeping backups of your important files and being careful about what you download or click on online.

How Common Is This?

Experts determine that cybersecurity breaches happen every few seconds on a global scale. That means it is not a matter of if, but of when a cybersecurity event happens to you.
